IABC University of Pittsburgh

A Student’s Guide to Communication Career Excellence

Semester Wrap-Up / Presidential Farewell

Posted by IABC/Pitt on November 20, 2008

Dear IABC/Pitt members:

I would like to personally thank everyone for a great semester! It has been an honor and a privilege to create this group, watch it grow, and serve as your first president. I encourage you to take advantage of everything IABC has to offer, attend as many events as possible, get networked, and find the internship or job of your dreams.

In the midst the current economic situation, the importance of “who you know and who knows you” becomes paramount. I strongly encourage you to utilize the tools provided by IABC (available to members at www.iabc.com). I also encourage you to research university resources to help you succeed – they are numerous. Find them and use them.

Next semester the group will be run by a motivated team who are putting together some great activities! Alison Zelis, who will be taking over, has informed me that meetings will be at a later time slot, so class conflicts should no longer be an issue. With that said, I strongly encourage all Marketing, English, Communication and Media/Professional Comm majors interested in business communications to join – and tell their friends.

In addition, don’t be afraid to give the officers feedback! They’re here to serve you and want to do the best job possible. If they’re doing something you don’t like, let them know! I’m sure they’d appreciate it.

Please continue to visit our website (http://iabcpitt.wordpress.com) where you can subscribe via e-mail updates or RSS feeds. There’s also a “links” section for a list of valuable research resources. Additionally, feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I’m happy to help. Good luck on finals and in the future!

Sincerely,
Justin Brunner

Golden Triangle Awards 2008

Posted by IABC/Pitt on November 5, 2008

by Brian Blunkosky

The Golden Triangle Awards was an excellent experience for those of us who attended.  Upon arrival we helped set up the trophy table and then situated pamphlets and promotional media on the dinner tables.

After freshening up, the guests began to arrive for a cocktail hour.  Alison, Danny, and I were a bit timid at first, but eventually loosened up and spoke to contest participants about their work.  This gave us the opportunity to learn about the different companies involved with IABC and the different occupations these individuals held.

As we found our way to our dinner table we initiated conversation with the other guests at our table.  The majority of the people sitting at our table worked at Jack Horner, while two of the other guests were from other communication companies.  These people were very friendly towards us once we began talking about our future career aspirations and current studies.

Overall, the experience was well worth the five minute drive to Duquesne.  After showing our true personalities, the professionals seemed much more inclined to speak to us rather than amongst themselves.  Our dinner party provided us with key information on how to go about a job interview (a C.O.O. of Jack Horner spoke to us about this) while also telling us what they are looking for in resumes when going through the interview process.  We would highly recommend this event to anyone looking to see some of the work that communication professionals produce.  Also, this was an excellent time to find out what particular job tasks a communications career entails and how other people went about acquiring them.

“A day in the life of…” kicks off with IABC/Pittsburgh Co-Pres.

Posted by IABC/Pitt on November 5, 2008

by Danny Gardner

The first session of IABC’s “A day in the life of…” series, which took place on Monday, October 13th, was very insightful and provided students with a first-hand perspective on public relations and corporate communications.  Laura Capp-Rihn, the co-president of IABC/Pittsburgh and corporate/community relations representative at Carlow University, began her speech by explaining how she got into her current profession.  She stressed that experience plays a crucial role in obtaining a job that best suits one’s ambitions.

One of the most interesting aspects of Laura’s talk was her discussion of things she didn’t learn in school that she now knows after becoming a public relations professional.  Everyone present learned that it is essential to make the right connections so that one can get their name out in the job market and demonstrate that they are a person who is dedicated to working hard.  In addition we were taught that networking simply means talking with others, and it is important to get involved with as many organizations and groups as possible while we are still in college.

Laura concluded her speech with helpful hints on what companies look for when reviewing a person’s resume.  Customizing your document to fit the job description and using precise keywords are great ways to catch the attention of future employers.  Laura also said that volunteer work and mentioning an idea or person from a corporation’s website significantly help an individual stand out when applying for an internship or job that hundreds of people compete for.

Laura was recently interviewed by IABC on becoming a chapter leader.  To view this interview, click here.

IABC/University of Pittsburgh would like to thank Laura for attending our meeting and providing us with enlightening comments that we can certainly take into consideration as we move forward in our professional careers.
